Epcot Plant Could Be Queen of Cucumbers

Cucumbers don't grow on trees, or do they? You may have to look twice when you tour The Land Pavilion at Epcot in Lake Buena Vista. On one side of the boat may be the world's largest-producing tomato plant and on the other side, the world's highest-yielding cucumber tree."We think we have established a world's record,'' says Yuqing Fan, an entomologist with Epcot Science at the Walt Disney World Co. and the one who has been nurturing the tree-size cucumber plant.Seeded on Dec. 12 and growing for more than half a year, the more than 6-foot-tall tree covered a 24-foot-wide and 30-foot-long trellis and yielded 2,563 cucumbers weighing 2,075 pounds. After a diligent search by Epcot horticulturists, there appears to be no other cucumber plant that has produced so many fruits. Plans are to submit these results to Guinness World Records in London.
