Disneyland Trains Now Running On Biodiesel

According to the OC Register, the five Disneyland Railroad trains that circle a one-mile perimeter of the park, began running on Wednesday, on cleaner burning biodiesel made with oil that comes from the resort's restaurants and hotels. Park officials had tried a soybean-based biodiesel starting in 2007, but had to give up on that in November 2008 because of problems storing it underground. So they regrouped while the trains went back to regular diesel fuel, then came up with the idea of recycling discarded cooking oil and turning into biodiesel for the trains.

Disney/ABC TV Group Cuts 400 Positions

The Walt Disney Co.'s television division is cutting 400 jobs, or about 6 percent of the unit's work force, due to the slumping economy. The cuts include 200 layoffs, while another 200 vacant positions will not be filled in a division that employs 6,500 to 7,000 people, said a Disney executive who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the number of job cuts had not been made public.

Disney To Combine Two ABC Units

Walt Disney Co said on Thursday it would combine two divisions, ABC Entertainment and ABC Studios. The newly formed unit, to be called ABC Entertainment Group, will be managed by President Stephen McPherson, who had previously served as president, ABC Entertainment. The company did not announce job cuts in conjunction with the merger, but said in a statement that McPherson would spent the next few months integrating the unit.

Disney Offers Buyout to 600 Executives

The Orlando Sentinel is reporting that Disney is offering buyouts to 600 executives in its domestic theme parks and resorts, including 313 managers at Disney World in Orlando, to reduce costs in the face of the ongoing nationwide recession.

American Idol Experience Sneak Previews Announced

Annual Passholders and Disney Vacation Club members are invited to attend a sneak preview of the new American Idol Experience at Disney's Hollywood Studios. The event is being held February 5-8, 2009. Attendance is limited. Passholder guests must register on the passholder page at disney.com. DVC members can sign up on their member site. It has come to our attention that Disney has been holding "test and adjust" days off and on - so be alert when passing by the attraction. It just might be a soft opening day. The American Idol Experience opens officially to guests on February 14.

'What Will You Celebrate?' Kicks Off With First Free Guest Admission

Andrew DaCosta, of Seattle, WA, was honored New Year's morning as the first person in the nation to receive free admission to a Disney theme park on his birthday as part of Disney's "What Will You Celebrate?". DaCosta, who turns 49 Jan. 1, redeemed his "Free On Your Birthday" registration at the Magic Kingdom Guest Relations window at 7:31 a.m.
