Disney Announces Partnership With Chiquita

Walt Disney World and Chiquita announced a partnership Friday that will bring produce to Disney's theme parks and cruise ships. As part of the agreement, Chiquita will sponsor the Crush 'n' Gusher, a water coaster at Typhoon Lagoon as well as Living with the Land at Epcot. Chiquita said in a press release it would also participate in runDisney marathon events, beginning with the Wine and Dine Half Marathon Weekend in September.

Spiltsville Comes to Downtown Disney's West Side

After recently disclosing the delay to the redo of the Pleasure Island area, Hyperion Wharf, Disney has announced that new entertainment, in the form of upscale bowling and billards, will be added in Downtown Disney. This fall, construction will begin on Splitsville, a 50,000-square-foot entertainment center that combines bowling with billiards, dining, music and nightlife. To make way for this experience, RIDEMAKERZ, currently located on the West Side, will move to the Marketplace.

New California Adventure Entrance Debuts

Gone are the big CALIFORNIA letters and Golden Gate Bridge, and in it's place Buena Vista Street is forming behind the new (although somewhat familiar to WDW visitors) entrance to Disney California Adventure. It's all part of a grand, multi-year re-imagineering project for the park, which is also set to debut Cars Land and much more in 2012.

ESPN The Weekend Cancelled

According to a release on the Disney Parks Blog, ESPN the Weekend will no longer be offered at Disney's Hollywood Studios. Disney states, "Our focus will be on creating events like the new ESPN RISE Girls Showcase and the ESPN RISE Games, which provide a stage for tens of thousands of athletes from around the country, and providing opportunities for guests to be part of events they’ve only before watched on television, such as the Home Depot College Football Awards and the Old Spice Classic." This annual event staged in Disney's Hollywood Studios in March, was first created in 2004 in support of ESPN's 25th anniversary.

Validating Beverage System to Begin at WDW Resort Hotels

The Walt Disney World resort has begun to implement new validating soft drink beverage systems at its Resort Hotels. Guests use the new beverage system by pushing their cup or mug against a lever arm located below the soft drink dispenser. The new beverage systems are reportedly made by ValidFill. The company describes their technology as RFID based and is capable of storing such information as Cup Size (in Ounces), Date Purchased, Location Purchased, and Time of Last Use into refillable mugs or in a tag that can be placed on disposable cups.
