| Dick Cook Puts Mickey on a Diet
Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook is fond of pointing out that of the top 100 movies of all time, 80 were (or could have been) a Disney-branded movie. That belief underlies last week's shakeup in the motion picture division, as the studio moves toward a scaled-back slate made up of easier-to-market, internationally relevant pics that build on the company's storied history of family entertainment. It's "Princess Diaries" vs. "Casanova," "Pirates of the Caribbean" sequels vs. "Hidalgo."

| Disney to Buy Indian Children's TV Channel
Walt Disney Co. has agreed to buy Hungama, an Indian children's cable and satellite TV channel that broadcasts in Hindi, for $30.5 million as it tries to keep pace with rivals in the fast-growing market. As part of the deal, Disney said on Tuesday it would pay an additional $14 million for a 14.9 percent stake in UTV Software Communications Ltd. (UTVS.BO), the diversified Indian media group that owns film and television assets, including Hungama via its United Home Entertainment unit.

| Disney to Slash 650 Jobs in Its Studio Division
The Walt Disney Co. is restructuring its studio division to emphasize blockbuster franchise films over more adult fare, a move that will mean slashing 650 jobs worldwide, the company announced. The restructuring will cut Disney's film output from about 18 a year to about a dozen. Of those, about 10 will be released under the Walt Disney Pictures banner, a proven family friendly brand that includes the successful "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise. The shift, the company explained, will allow Disney films to bolster the resources of other divisions. A hit like "Pirates of the Caribbean," for example, can spawn video games, action figures, cable TV shows and, in the case of "Pirates," give new life to an old Disney theme park attraction.

| For Ailing Disney, a Shot of Strong Medicine
In elevating the two executives, both of whom are close to the studio chairman, Richard Cook, Disney is betting on a revolution from within, unlike Paramount Pictures, which quickly brought in outsiders to shake up a staid culture last year. Mr. Cook was charged with reinventing the studio last year. Robert A. Iger, Disney’s newly appointed chief executive, has said that his priorities would be global expansion and promoting Disney products across all the company’s divisions.

| Keith Richards to Be in 'Pirates' Movie
Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is lined up to play the swashbuckling father of a pirate in the third installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" series, star Johnny Depp said Tuesday. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer said Richards would have a cameo role as the father of the flamboyant Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Depp, in the third "Pirates" movie, which is due to resume filming next month in California. Depp, 43, has said he adopted the body language and mannerisms of the veteran guitarist to create Captain Jack's character.
